Sew House 7 Tea House Dress in Ochre Carlow Linen

by Jayne from The Dressmakers Closet

I’ve been looking for a summer dress with clean lines, simple style and nothing too fussy for ages. Something different to all the usual gathered voluminous maxi dresses, which I do love and have several in my wardrobe. When I came upon this sewing pattern I knew it would be just perfect. I was also intrigued by Sew House 7 as I had never used their patterns before. I also wanted to make a completely plain dress, no florals or checks so chose this gorgeous ochre linen by Modelo Fabrics.

It was difficult to decide because there are 14 beautiful shades to choose from, but the ochre just caught my eye. I also sampled a new sewing thread by Scanfil which is 100% organic cotton wound onto the cutest wooden spools. It’s a really strong thread but extremely soft which resulted in perfect stitches. My machine loved it and I’m sure my top stitching was better than ever because of how smooth it was to sew with.

The pattern comes with 3 length options - hip, above the knee and maxi length. There’s also 2 waist tie options, making it super versatile. The sleeves are dolman style with added cuffs. I chose the full length option with broad waist ties that wrap around the waist twice. There’s also a cute little box pleat on the back yoke, which just adds that extra touch. I chose size 10, based on the finished garment measurements but it’s quite roomy on me. I could easily go down another size next time. Thankfully the waist ties bring in the dress so it’s not really noticeable on me.

I really enjoyed making this dress and found it made up much quicker than anticipated. There’s no fastenings to worry about and the sleeves are built in dolman style. I wouldn’t recommend this pattern to a beginner dressmaker as there are a few tricky sections to contend with and I did find the instructions a little confusing at times. Working with any natural fabric, especially linen, is always a pleasure to me and this stunning mustard shade was just a joy. It’s such a happy sunshine summer colour.

I absolutely love this dress and am already planning on making another in, you guessed it a floral cotton or linen blend, just to see how different it looks. There is also options to elaborate quite a bit on this dress because of the front and back yokes, a-line panels, cuffs and waist ties. A bit of mix and match with fabrics could look really lovely and I am so tempted to try this on my next one. Oh the endless possibilities!

Overall, I love the simple elegant style of The Tea House dress and it’s also good to try something a bit different. I really like the double wrap waist ties which give it a vintage look and feminine silhouette. I also know it will become a well loved piece in my wardrobe and because it’s linen it will last me for years to come and get better with age.

If you’re looking for a classic style dress then this is definitely worth trying.
